Master Planning: A Step-By-Step Guide

“If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll probably end up somewhere else.”

Who in the private club business hasn’t seen proof of author David Campbell’s mantra? In older clubs, especially, we deal daily with the ill-considered and long-term effects of inadequate planning. With economic pressures, changing member needs, greater competition for members’ time and attention, even aging infrastructures and inadequate space allocation, we can’t stress enough the importance of having solid strategic and master plans — a vision and a roadmap for getting there.

It need not be a painful process. In fact, the Master Planning process can be a great way to reengage members and grow participation — with the right resources and a deliberate communications effort.

We’ll take an in depth look here over the coming months at the Master Planning process — the steps, potential pitfalls and ways of communicating with members to ensure successful outcomes.  Our process includes:

  • facilities analysis
  • deferred maintenance analysis
  • facilities improvement recommendations
  • cost/affordability analysis and pro forma
  • recommendations for plan phasing and implementation

And we’ll answer your questions. Comment on this post or send us an email and we’ll give you our thoughts and insights.
