Background

The Landings is the largest private club in the United States, comprising four separate clubs, including the prestigious Plantation Club. Chambers inherited a facility designed in a 1970s transitional style that was showing signs of age. The Property Owners' Board, Club leadership and membership felt the club needed to better reflect the traditional low country design of the area and to take advantage of the beautiful views across marshland and river.

Our Approach

Because the budget for what the club hoped to achieve was stringent, Chambers had to leverage its connections with fabric houses, furniture manufacturers, and art sources, art having been identified as important to members. Because the envelope, the buildings themselves, were somewhat contemporary without the simple richness of low country style, Chambers began with beautiful new millwork to create the appropriate background for understated interiors that anticipated the family focus that would soon become important in clubs across the country.

Results

The beautiful new architectural embellishments, the addition of a new ballroom, and the understated interiors that focused on the views soon turned club usage around, from a facility used occasionally to one used fully and completely by members and their families. The Chambers' style that had attracted the members and leadership was achieved, despite the strict budget, through Chambers' long and amicable relationship with its many vendors that allowed for creative and judicious purchasing.
